Challenge:
A custom client/server system had been written, however
the performance was not adequate for large search
results.
Solution:
A new version of the protocol was developed that was
backward compatible with previous clients, but allowed
newer clients to scan through search result on a demand
basis. The protocol was documented, and several implementations
of the protocol were developed, allowing greater choice
amongst the clients prospective partners.
Results:
A more responsive UI led to increased user satisfaction,
and the system was picked up by Time-Warner for their
Road Runner division's multimedia search engine.
